Women on the Water: The History of Female Sailors on the Great Lakes

Sunday, May 18,,
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

South Shore Yacht Club
2300 E. Nock St.

Join Chicago Maritime Museum curator Madeline Crispell for a deep dive into the history of women sailors on the Great Lakes. Though organizations like the MWSC are relatively recent, they build on a long and fascinating legacy of women and watercraft in the region. Learn the stories of women like Florence Haas (1863-1943), the first woman to be a licensed captain on the Great Lakes, or the all-female crew of the Lady Eileen, who competed in the 1905 Race to Mackinac.

Madeline Crispell is the curator of the Chicago Maritime Museum. Her exhibitions across Chicagoland have focused on a range of subjects, from American travel history to the Thorne Miniature Rooms. Prone to seasickness, Madeline enjoys researching the rich history of the Great Lakes from libraries and museums on dry land.

Your registration fee of $50 includes a hot breakfast buffet bar, all taxes and gratuities and a donation to the Chicago Maritime Museum. A "cash" bar (credit card only) will be available.

This program is available to all attendees and friends of the Midwest Women's Sailing Conference. Conference attendance is not required for registration.

Space is limited.
